Fire represents an important natural feature of Brazilian landscape, especially in the Cerrado biome. The Cerrado isthe economic livelihood of thousands of people from rural areas in Brazil. It is one of the most important hotspots of biodiversity inthe world but also it is a fire-prone area thanks to the high flammability index of the vegetation. Residents and native people of this environment use fire very frequently. The majority of wildfires are caused by humans, though there are some aggravating natural factors affecting the risk, intensity and severity of wildfires. Since residents are continuously involved in fire suppression activities, understanding their perceptions is important for the decision makers who must assess the local capacity to preserve natural resources. This study explores perceptions about wildfire risk and fire mitigation behaviours within three municipalities of the state of Tocantins (Brazil).

The objective of this study was to analyze the relationships between moisture content and the flammability of campestral Cerrado species in the Jalapão region. For that, six species were collected (Trachypogon spicatus, Aristida sp., Davilla elliptica, Byrsonima verbascifolia, Hirtella ciliata and Dalbergia miscolobium) and analyzed in four moisture levels (H1, H2, H3 and H4). The tests were performed in the epirradiator, with 50 replicates of 1 g sample for each species, to obtain the ignition frequency (IF), the mean time to ignition (MTI), the time of combustion (MTC) and flame height (MFH). Correlations between moisture and other variables were r = 0.94 (MTI), r = -0.43 (MTC), r = -0.87 (MFH) and r = -0.73 (IF). The linear regression equations had R²aj values of 0.87 (MTI); 0.15 (MTC); 0.74 (MFH) and 0.50 (IF). There was influence of humidity in the change of flammability variables, however, there was little variation in the flammability values (FV), except for the species Aristida sp., and Dalbergia misc

The aim of this study was to examine the major factors influencing the occurrence of fires by analyzing the frequency ratio (FR) of areas with the greatest occurrence of prescribed burning and wildfire and to generate the susceptibility map of these occurrences for the Indigenous Territory of Kraholândia (Tocantins state), Brazil. A supervised classification method was apply using the Mahalanobis algorithm, and the fire scars were delimited from 2003 to 2014 based on images obtained from the Landsat-5, CBERS-2, ResourceSat-1, and Landsat-8 satellites. The higher recurrence fire class was using as a reference to assess the following variables: topography; type of land use; soil classification; and distances from human settlement, roads, and waterways. The FR of prescribed burning or wildfire occurrences was determined for each variable and a subsequent map for all the variables was create wiht the FR value of the sum of each pixel was denoted as the fire susceptibility index (FSI).
